EILAND VAN MAURIK NOORD
Nederland, Gelderland
The Eiland van Maurik (Island of Maurik) is a recreational lake that is directly connected to the Nederrijn (Lower Rhine). This has some consequences. It's busy on summer days, there are plenty of facilities, visibility is variable and biodiversity is high. Local divers appreciate Eiland van Maurik as a nice dive site with beautiful, extensive mussel fields, cray fish, chinese mitten crabs and sometimes salmon.
Particulars
Entering the water is easy at the Eiland van Maurik. Just walk into the water from the beach, then put on your fins and start floating over the mussel fields. Concentrate on the north and southwest sides of the beach (see map) for the best visibility and the best chance to spot fish. Beyond the shallow mussel colony on the south side lies a jetty with a nicely overgrown underwater structures.
Warnings
Paid parking. Avoid crowded sunny days. Beware of surfers and pleasure boats. Use a deco buoy if necessary. Don't dive too deep, you'll end up in the shipping route.
