Ship Hephaestus may become a diving attraction

The other alternative is to sell the ship as scrap metal

The small bunker tanker Hephaestus, which was damaged during a storm in Malta near Qawra in February 2018 and ran aground, possibly will become a new dive attraction. Mario Cassar of salvage company Cassar Marine Group said that the ship can be ready within two months after engines, oil and wood have been removed and adjustments are made for the safety of divers. Diving in Malta

Last week, when the 61 meter long and 8 meter wide tanker was brought in the dock of the Cassar Marine Group it soon became clear that repairing the ship would be too expensive and probably impossible. The ship has been litterly thrown on the rocky coast during the storm. The damage caused by this event was so substantial that even docking the ship was a challenge in itself. The other alternative is to sell the ship as scrap metal. Hephaestus would make a great diving wreck. For the time being, it remains uncertain whether this will be her fate.
