PLYMOUTH BREAKWATER

Groot Brittanie

/ 1 / 1

Plymouth Breakwater is the perfect backup dive site. Divers regularly come here when conditions elsewhere in the area are disappointing. The underwater world of Plymouth Breakwater is diverse. The north side is sheltered from the open sea. This area has a sandy bottom with spider crabs, scallops and dogfish as permanent residents. The south side looks very different. This is a rocky area with kelp growth and a wide variety of plants and animals.

Particulars

Plymouth Breakwater can be reached by boat. Dive on the north or south side of the breakwater, depending on the weather conditions. Plymouth Breakwater is a 1560-foot-long, 13-foot-wide, stone breakwater. The property was built to protect Fort Plymouth Sound and the anchorages at Plymouth, Devon. Approximately 4 million tons of rock were used for construction in 1812 at the then colossal cost of 1.5 million pounds.

Warnings

There can be boat traffic at Plymouth Breakwater. Use a surface buoy.
