Spine removal, the local way. Auuwchh...!

"The worried father asked again and again if it was all right."

Scuba diver, Jans van Wieren, experienced this violent incident during a diving holiday in Bali. Two weeks of diving at dive sites like Coral Garden Bali and then two more days relaxing in Sanur. And then. The local way of removing the spines of a sea urchin. The footage can be experienced as intense. Video: Jans van Wieren.

"When we walked along the beach in Sanur we heard someone screaming in pain," says Jans. "A French boy had stepped barefoot on a sea urchin. Locals offered help, but not in the way we as scuba divers learned from DAN Europa. The spines in the foot were smashed with a stone, after which the foot was rubbed with herbs. The worried father asked again and again if it was all right. After an hour the pain would be over and the spines would fall out by themselves. They had been doing this for years. I don't know the outcome, I couldn't watch it any longer. But I did whisper to the boy's father to consult a local doctor."
