GRAN CENOTE
Mexico
Gran Cenote is a beautiful cenote suitable for snorkeling, diving and cave diving. The location is very popular and therefore a bit touristy. There are plenty of facilities including changing rooms, toilets, lockers and a small shop for snacks and drinks. Gran Cenote is part of the enormous Sac Actun System, the longest system of underground rivers in the world that stretches more than 346 kilometers below the surface of the Yucatan Peninsula. More than 130 cenotes are connected to the system, of which Gran Cenote is one of the most beautiful.
Particulars
Gran Cenote is easy accessible. Enter the water from the jetty with stairs to end up in an open cavern. Here you can snorkel under the cave roof between the turtles and small fish while the bats fly above your head. The beautiful light makes it a breathtaking experience. The tunnels under the ground are the domain of experienced cave divers. They can follow different routes along the most beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, via fixed guide lines.
Warnings
Gran Cenote can be very busy. Be there early. A cave diving license is required for diving in the cave itself.
