BIRD ROCK
Verenigde Staten, California
Bird Rock is one of the best dive sites on Catalina Island. It's a large domed rock, where large bird colonies come to breed during the season. Bird Rock is a varied dive site with shallow reefs, steep walls and even an underwater arch. Depending on the season you may also run into kelp forests here. Furthermore, it is a dive site for everyone with calm, clear water and little or no current.
Particulars
Bird Rock is easy to reach. A number of dive charter boats depart both from the mainland and from Avalon. Most diving is being done at the west side of the rock. The shallow reefs close to the rock are the domain of snorkelers. Divers like to follow the steeply sloping walls in search of colorful gorgonians, scallops and blue band gobies. If you follow the reef in a westerly direction you will come across a large underwater arch at a depth of 17 meters. Make sure to bring your camera.
Warnings
There can be strong currents at Bird Rock, towards open sea. Stay near the rock.
