SAN DIMITRI POINT
Malta
San Dimitri Point is just south of the most westerly point of Gozo. The cliffs of San Dimitri climb up to over 80 meters. At the depth of 6 meters, you can find a shallow plateau. The top of this reef is perfect for anchoring the dive boat and completing any safety stop. The first part of the drop-off gently leads down to some house-sized boulders with vertical walls. Due west in the open water you reach a depth around 30 meters, follow it in a big semi-circle to the south. Upon returning to the anchor-place, there is a sheltered swim-through between the cliff wall and the backside of the reef before you ascend. It's a marvelous place to dive due to its great visibility and big species of fish.
Particulars
Several connected underwater caverns can also be explored nearby. A very popular legend is connected with this site. An old hermit built a small chapel right at the edge of the cliff which he dedicated to Saint Dimitri. One day, a big chunk of the cliff collapsed sending the chapel to the bottom of the sea. However, the legend continues that this underwater chapel remains intact even today with a light burning in the window and that one can still hear the hourly chiming of the bell!
Warnings
Can be difficult with surface chop and current; only dive in calm waters and an easterly wind.
