A struggle between a big pike and a fist-thick eel. It happened right before the eyes of Lianne van Selm, a young scuba diver in Holland. Together with Henk van Selm, both members of the diving team Nieuwegein, she made a dive that she won't easily forget. Divers Guide Support Team: Lianne van Selm. Video: Lianne van Selm. Watch video:
Diving in Everstein
It happened in dive site Everstein near the Dutch city of Utrecht. Lianne and Henk made a shallow dive that day to take pictures of the innumerable young fish that are currently swimming around in Everstein. While Lianne is concentrating on the perfect picture of a young pike, she is suddenly startled. "I got distracted by violent movements in the vegetation below me," she says. "A large pike and a fist-sized eel were caught up in a fight." Lianne grabs her camera and for a moment she hesitates.
Photographing or filming
"Am I going to take a picture of do I film this," I wondered for a second. "Then I switched my camera to film mode and started filming. It was difficult to make good images between the vegetation. They moved very fast and of course I couldn't leave my buddy. I think the struggle lasted five minutes. It was fascinating and anxious at the same time to be suddenly dragged into this side of nature. Fortunately, the eel managed to escape."
