RMS ATHENS WRECK
South Africa, Western Cape
The SMS Athens Wreck is a shallow wreck that's easily accessible from shore. The Athens is one of the ships that went down off the coast of Cape Town during a severe northwest storm on May 17, 1865. The ship ran into shore near Mouille Points, Cape Town. All thirty crew members died in the disaster. The engine block of the Athens can be seen sticking out above the waves from the parking lot. The wreck is quite damaged by treasure divers and overgrown with kelp. It's an easy dive, but don't enter the water in high swells.
