The City of Washington is one of the most popular wrecks of Elbow Reef. It is an old steamship with two masts and three decks, built in 1877. The City of Washington carried both cargo and passengers. The ship sank as a coal barge in 1917, when it ran on Elbow Reef. The wreck has largely perished, all its contours of the hold and the keel are still clearly visible.

The wreck is located offshore of Elbow Reef, approximately 6 miles off Key Largo. You'll dive shallowly over the wreck of the City of Washington. The wreckage is spread over a length of one hundred meters. The underwater life is exuberant, this area is home to moray eels, sea bass, barracudas and nurse sharks.
